🇷🇴 Romanian Wedding Survival Guide

For our American guests, friends, and anyone wondering what they just walked into…

Welcome to a Romanian wedding! You are about to experience a celebration full of family, traditions, music, dancing, food, and enough energy to last well into the night.

And yes… there will be dancing. A lot of dancing.

In Romanian weddings, the Nași (pronounced nahsh) are the wedding godparents and play a very important role.

Think of them as:

✨ Mentors
✨ Supporters
✨ Family by choice
✨ Honorary life coaches for the bride and groom

They stand beside us during the ceremony and continue being part of our lives long after the wedding day.

No pressure, right? 😊

Yes. Seriously.

One of Romania’s most fun wedding traditions is “Stealing the Bride” (Furatul Miresei).

At some point during the celebration, friends may “kidnap” the bride and take her away (usually somewhere nearby for photos and laughs).

The groom then has to “win her back” by:

🍷 Buying drinks
🎤 Singing a song
💃 Dancing
😂 Completing funny challenges

Don’t worry — it’s all part of the fun.

(TJ has been warned.) cobblestone streets, colorful rooftops, and that unmistakable Old Town magic.

Check out our Favorites, Ceremony and Reception/Accommodations pages for more details.

Because in Romania…

The party is the event.

Romanian weddings traditionally continue late into the evening — and sometimes into the early morning hours.

Expect:

🍽 Multiple courses of food
🎶 Live music
💃 Dancing between meals
🥂 Toasts
🎂 Cake late at night
🎉 More dancing

So pace yourself. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

In Romania, weddings are traditionally more dressed-up occasions. Guests often wear elegant dresses, suits, or cocktail attire even at casual venues, as it’s seen as a sign of celebration. For Sibiu, formal or cocktail attire is the norm, and we can’t wait to see everyone dressed beautifully for the occasion.

You may notice large circles forming on the dance floor.

Join them.

Romanian dances are often community dances where everyone participates together.

You may see:

🕺 Hora — circle dance symbolizing unity and celebration
💃 Group folk dances full of energy and tradition
🎶 Fast music that somehow makes everyone dance perfectly except first-timers

No experience needed.

Just follow the circle and smile.

Romanians do weddings big.

Elegant attire is part of honoring:

❤️ The couple
👨‍👩‍👧 Family traditions
🎉 The importance of the celebration

Expect beautiful dresses, suits, traditional clothing, and people looking absolutely amazing.

Tonight isn’t just a party.

It’s a celebration of family, heritage, and forever.

✅ Wear comfortable dancing shoes
✅ Eat everything
✅ Save room for cake
✅ Expect lots of photos
✅ Learn a few dance steps
✅ Stay longer than planned

And remember:

You are not just attending a wedding.

You are joining a Romanian celebration.

Welcome to our story. ❤️

With love,
T.J. & Roxana
